STEAM Carnival

Age: 4 – 6 years old

Duration: 60 minutes

Material Used: LEGO Education STEAM Park

Fee: $10 per workshop (U.P. $25)

Workshop – What Are Ramps Used For?

STEAM Carnival workshop is one of the best ways to build on every child’s natural curiosity and desire to create, explore, and investigate the world of early science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) through creative play. The possibilities are endless, as you work with them to construct a STEAM Park full of dynamic moving rides, fun games, and scenes using the special selection of LEGO® DUPLO® bricks. With every trip to STEAM Park, children grow their understanding of gears, motion, measurement, and solving problems together in a fun and engaging way. Throughout the lessons, strategic questions will guide children through the process of applying science, technology, engineering, art, and math skills. Furthermore, the LEGO® DUPLO® building activities will reinforce the children’s creativity.

Workshop Objectives

Several factors will cause an object to roll or slide, beginning with a force (i.e., a push or pull) that acts on the object. Gravity is a force that pulls objects toward the earth or down a slope. The shape of an object affects how it moves down a slope. Objects such as balls, which do not have corners or edges, will roll. Other objects will tend to slide rather than roll due to their shape. Size and texture determine the speed of rolling or sliding.

  • Observe what happens when they place objects on a ramp
  • Make predictions
  • Measure how far objects move
  • Record data

FUNtastic Gears

Age: 4 – 6 years old

Duration: 60 minutes

Material Used: LEGO Education Early Simple Machines

Fee: $10 per workshop (U.P. $25)

Workshop – Spinning Top

Children love to explore the world around them and they are constantly curious about how things work. This experience will help them to understand the movement of familiar things. They will be able to experiment with the concept of balance, stability, buoyancy and much more. Introduce them to science and design technology concepts and they will get to use their imagination to design and build their own models.

 Workshop Objectives

In this workshop, the children will be able to explore the basic mechanical principles such as gears, levers, pulleys, wheels and axles.

  • How movement can be described in many ways
  • How push and pull affect the movement and shape of objects
  • Framework structures and how to make them stable
  • Wheels and axles and how to use these for a specific purpose.

Aspiring Engineers!

Workshop – Go-Kart

This workshop is designed to instill the basics of machines and mechanisms. Learn more about the science behind the simple machines – gears, levers, pulleys, and wheel & axle and how they are the foundation elements that go into designing any machine. In these sessions, children will be introduced to these simple machines and build a relevant model which focuses on engineering these simple machines to make the model work.

Workshop Objectives

  • The science behind Wheels & Axle
  • Experiment with different sizes of Wheels & Axle
