Learn Coding and Robotics with this latest LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime Online Course where children can dabble in engineering and design as well as an introduction to programming with Scratch 3.0.

Ideal for children aged 9 and above, the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime Online Course aims to introduce children to the basics of coding and robotics. The block-based visual programming language is easy to navigate – children can look forward to creating cool robots and robotic projects through guided tutorials. The course consists of 10 projects plus assessment, spanning across 15 hours of lessons. After they finish the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

 

About the curriculum

The LEGO Education SPIKE PRIME Curriculum by Duck Learning is a curriculum module designed to teach core computer programming logic and reasoning skills using basic robotics engineering context. It contains a sequence of 9 Lesson modules, (grouped into 3 sections with an assessment module at the end of each section), and a bonus session.  organized around key programming concepts.

Course objective

This course aims to help students learn essential STEAM and 21st-century skills, equip them with basic coding knowledge and learn how to engineer a robot.  Students will learn how to code on the Scratch 3.0 coding platform, which is one of the most commonly used coding platforms in schools.

All of the projects required them to engineer a robotic model using the latest LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime set which helps develop their engineering design skills.

Course Outline

 

Lesson 1: Introduction and your first robot!

  • Introduction to LEGO Education SPIKE Prime set and its compartments
  • Learn about the various parts and what it is used for – the motors, hub, gyro sensor, touch sensor etc

Lesson 2: Lights, sound, wave!

Step by Step Building Instruction

 

  • Create and program a robot that can greet, smile and wave

 


Lesson 3: Wait, robot arm

Step by Step programming instruction

 

  • Robot arms are commonly used in various industries today from manufacturing to logistics. Learn the mechanics of the robot arm, build and program your very own robot arm.

 


Assessment No. 1: Build and program a specific model based on what you’ve learnt before 

you can progress further

Before students can progress to Section 2, they are required to complete this online assessment. Students are required to build and program a specific model in accordance with the requirement stated in this course.

The project will be based on what they have learned in the first 3 lessons.

Lesson 4:  Working on IF-ELSE and Building a Grab Gauntlet with touch sensor

 

  • You can only proceed to Lesson 4 if you pass the assessment module in Section 1
  • Learn about IF-ELSE function and how to use a touch sensor
  • What differentiates a robot and a machine? Robots are SMART machines that are able to make decisions
  • Learn how to program a robot that can make a decision independently
  • Build and program a Grab Gauntlet

Lesson 5: Working on IF-ELSE and Building a Smart Car with ultrasonic sensor

 

  • Continue working on IF-ELSE function and learn how to use an ultrasonic sensor
  • Learn how an ultrasonic sensor works, how a signal is received
  • Learn about the mechanics of how a SMART or Driverless vehicle works
  • Build and program your own SMART car

Lesson 6:  Working on Multiple conditions and Building Emotibot

 

  • The main focus is on programming in this lesson
  • Learn about the colour sensor and how it is being used
  • Learn how to program multiple conditions such that the robot takes a different action based on the input, for example, when it senses a different colour
  • Build and program a robot that detects colour and make the appropriate action based on it

Assessment No. 2: Build and program a specific model based on what you’ve learnt before you can progress further

Before students can progress to Section 3, they are required to complete this online assessment. Students are required to build and program a specific model in accordance with the requirement stated in this course.

The project will be based on what they have learned in the first 6 lessons.

Lesson 7: Operators and  Building a Sit-up Count Bot

 

  • Focus on longer programming sequences with new concepts
  • Learn about variables
  • Build a simple robot and learn about the programming principles behind it

Lesson 8:  Random, Speed variable and the Dragster

 

  • Learn about Speed variable
  • Work on logical thinking and how to plan your program
  • Build and program a Dragster which can measure its own speed and display it on the SPIKE Prime Hub
  • Explore the mechanics and concept behind the programming

 


Lesson 9: Reaction to Logic Gates

 

 

  • Enhancing the same Dragster built in Lesson 8 and adding an ultrasonic sensor to it
  • Learn a new programming concept – Logic Gates, combining values from 2 different sensors
  • Combining the speed variable and input from the ultrasonic sensor for the robot to make a decision based on the inputs
  • For example,  a smiley face is displayed when the dragster is travelling at a safe speed and maintaining a safe distance from obstacles

Assessment No. 3: Build and program a specific model based on what you’ve learnt before 

Before students can receive their certificate of completion, they are required to complete this online assessment. Students are required to build and program a specific model in accordance with the requirement stated in this course.

The project will be based on what they have learned in this course.
