Nurturing innovation through Applied Learning has been part of the Ministry Education (MOE)’s continuing efforts to develop future generations of resilient, innovative and curious lifelong learners who are empowered to chart their own paths of success, and rooted in sound values and a shared Singapore identity.

To engage students in their learning, MOE will provide more opportunities for applied learning throughout the curriculum. Learning comes alive when students are involved in hands-on, experiential learning, which allows them to situate and apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts. This is the critical catalyst that builds on the learning in the classroom and takes it forward to enrich students’ overall learning.

Duck Learning provided customised STEM curriculum solutions to schools and has conducted some of the programme as an Applied Learning Programme in selected schools.

Creativity with Strawbees for Applied Learning Programme

Strawbees creates fun and engaging maker experiences for learning across all age groups! Using straws and connectors, students can instantly turn their imagination into a real, physical prototype. Learning through tinkering allow experimentation and investiagation to take place, which helps to develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills.

Make: Students will put on their creative hats and create ride prototypes with Strawbees, taking note of how ride mechanisms work

Observe: They will observe the moment of their prototype rides and think of a solution

Modify: Students will solve problems and work collaboratively to improve their prototype

Maker + Coding with SAM Labs

Sam Labs brings the future to your classroom! Integrating Bluetooth technology into modular parts known as Sams, Sam Labs has created a complete maker tool for learning the concepts of STEAM, both in the classroom and out!
Sam Labs not only introduces the world of coding to students in a fun and engaging way, but also allows students to make their own prototypes for each creative project!

Through processes such as theory generation, experiment design and hypothesis testing, students can explore and create various solution to a single problem

  • Students strategise their solutions through design sketching, mapping and analysis
  • Design purposeful, functional and aesthetic products from their solution criterias
Computational Thinking

Students create step by step solutions to complex problems using concepts such as Deconstruction and Pattern Recognition

Lesson idea: Build a smart home
  • Build: Students build their ideal smart home using building materials such as carboards or LEGO
  • Program: Students learn to program the relevant blocks e.g. light blocks, sensors and button
  • Explore: Students will explore how to improve their smart home, how they will create a system that changes or react to the environment around it. e.g. a ceiling fan that switches on automatically when the temperature exceed a certain measurement
  • Open-ended: Studens can come tohether, combine their creation and build a smart neighbourhood as a class

Explore Scientific Concepts with WeDo 2.0

LEGO Education WeDo2.0 provides students with an easy and fun entry into the world of  coding and engineering! Studetns are encouraged to explore, experiment and innovate with the various parts at hand to create their own creative solution to any project given.

Through the various activities and projects, student will further develop and enhance skills such as Communication, Independency, Experimental Design and Computational Thinking.

Computational and critical thinking skills

By analysing the task given and evaluating their progress, students will achieve greater insight in creating their solutions

Coding and engineering fundamentals
  • Students get to understand the basics of coding with WeDo 2.0 block-based programming.
  • Understand the use of mechanism in robotics.
Lesson idea: Preventing Pollution of the Sea
  • Explore: Students explore technology currently used to clean oceans of plastic waste.
  • Create: They will proceed to design and program solutions that can be integrated or improve current technology.
  • Share: Students will present their models and share about the design process of their prototype.

Robotics and Engineering with EV3

EV3 introduces real-world robotics for both students and adults. Through building and coding with this set, together with the software, it helps in developing problem solving skills and promote teamwork in groups.

Students use LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 set as a platform to break down a problem and discover solutions based on computational thinking

Design Thinking

Students will be guided through the Design Thinking Process and design their unique solution to the problem given.

21st Century Skills, Logical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills
  • Understand the process and functionality of the program, followed by troubleshooting the robot to work accordingly.
  • Think creatively to solve the problem given with a mechanical design.
Lesson Idea: Building an automated warehouse

Students will be tasked to build an automated solution for a warehouse to improve its efficiency
They will first analyse the problem then design and build a prototype solution such as a robot arm with sensors to sort goods in the warehouse.

Syntax Coding with Arduino

Arduino Education introduces the foundations of programming, electronics and mechanics through a series of playful, well documented projects and easy to assemble experiments.

Physical Learning
  • Learn the basics of digital technologies that is required to control digital actuators and to read digital sensors.
  • E.g. Students will understand how electricity flows through a circuit and will be able to use that knowledge to light an LED using Arduino.
Logic and Building Skills
  • Allow students to investigate their interest in science and technology in a unique way.
  • E.g Students will use the Arduino with both analogue inputs and outputs in a sketch. Students will be able to maintain lighting levels using a Photoresistor.
Real World Problem Solving
  • Analyse, design and write executable programs for each of the Learning Expectations.
  • E.g How do lightning detectors work? Commercial lightning detectors can be rather expensive; therefore students can work on turning Arduino into a lightning detector. The aim is to construct a simple circuit to detect lightning with an Arduino and produce meaningful results.
Object-Oriented Programming

Advanced Programming + Smartphone control

  • Create projects and learn how to make use of the on-board sensors such as the accelero- meter and gyroscope.
Lesson Idea
  • E.g Employ coding skills to innovate solutions for automated space travel using the on-board sensors.
